The Gozo Children’s Choir
This April saw the formation of The Gozo Children’s Choir. The choir was created by popular singer and musician Miriam Christine who had been dreaming about such an initiative for several years. It was set up to encourage singing talent for both newcomers as well as children who have been singing for some time and to give the children another outlet with which to express themselves and gain confidence.
The response so far has been very heartening, with over 50 children from around Gozo enrolled so far for the weekly sessions, which the children are really enjoying, especially as Miriam Christine has been very careful in choosing a repertoire that includes a lot of pop music, popular local songs and Eurovision hits, all of which goes down well with kids.
Members of The Gozo Children’s Choir are now busy preparing for their first public performance, which will take place during popular TV show “Showtime” on TVM, Saturday 23 June. Miriam Christine admits that the children are very excited about their first performance and also about a busy summer ahead which is going to see them performing both in Malta and in Gozo.
The choir sessions are held on Saturday mornings at Lumen Christi Media Centre in Victoria. There are only a few places available in the Gozo Children’s Choir so any parents of children, who are interested in joining the choir, please click here to contact Miriam Christine

MC Penned Song in Song for Europe Final
The song ‘I Promise You’, with music and lyrics written by Miriam Christine, has qualified for the finals of the Malta Song for Europe contest.
MC wrote the song specifically for the increasingly popular singer Manuel Xuereb. Manuel, who also co-hosts the successful Saturday night TV show ‘Show Time ma’ Aceline’, is a good friend of Miriam Christine. The song’s author, who has previously represented her country in the Eurovision, says; “When Manuel asked if I’d write him a song for the competition, I couldn’t say no. He’s a good personal friend of mine and a talented singer with plenty of charisma. I think that, given the chance, he can woo the audience on a big stage. Hopefully I can also offer Manuel a bit of humble advice based on my experience as a singer… and as a past winner. Not that he needs that much, mind you; he’s quite a performer.”
Manuel will be performing ‘I Promise You’ at the final to be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on 4th February along with the other 17 finalists. The voting system is 100% televoting… which means that the decision is solely based on the public’s opinion.
Asked about her thoughts on the voting system, MC said “I agree with it. Of all the options, I think this is the fairest. I have faith in the public’s vote and, at the end of the day the winner goes to represent the Maltese and Gozitan public… so why shouldn’t they decide?”
Miriamchristine.com wishes Manuel all the best of luck. |

WATCH THE ‘MYSTERY MAMA’ MUSIC
VIDEO
Click here to see the video for
Miriam Christine’s latest single, ‘Mystery Mama’.
The video’s concept mixes reality with fiction. Miriam
Christine explains, “Even though I met my biological
mother, the video takes a step back in time in a way… and
is about a girl who has located her mum, but is putting material
together… home video stuff… photos of her growing
up… to show her who she is. It’s a kind of introduction
of herself. The song’s lyrics are part of that message,
too.”
Talking about the shoot, director (and husband) Mark Warner
says, “We were going to the UK close to the release
of the song… so we thought we’d take the opportunity,
like we have in the past, to make use of different locations.
Setting the shoot away from Malta also enabled us to blur
reality and fiction, even though we used locations in the
UK that are significant to [Miriam] Christine on a personal
basis, like the use of Southend United’s football ground
[Roots Hall] for which we were very thankful”.
The video was filmed in Malta and in the UK, directed by
Mark Warner and produced through Visual Impact’s Legwork
Productions who provided production and post production facilities
and services.

Releases New Single “Mystery Mama”
April 26th sees the release of Miriam Christine’s latest
single “Mystery Mama”, from the album ‘Little
Zee’.
Speaking about her latest release, Miriam Christine said, “Mystery
Mama has always been a special song to me for very personal
reasons, which many people are aware of, but I was reluctant
to release the track as a single because I thought it might
be seen as being a bit self-indulgent. There were a couple
of other tracks from the album in contention, but the popular
opinion was in favour of ‘Mystery Mama’. In the
end, I believe you have to listen to other people because
they’re the ones that count. When a prominent radio
broadcaster also voiced his opinion in favour of ‘Mystery
Mama’ my mind was made up.”
Meanwhile, filming for the music video which will accompany
the new single has already started. Keep logging on to find
out more info about the video which will be launched soon.

Miriam Christine: Roots
Hall Performance
On December 28th, MC performed two songs from her album ‘Little
Zee’ at Roots Hall stadium, home of English League 2
football club Southend United, entertaining the supporters
before the Southend United v Mansfield Town kick-off.
Breaking away from her usual topic of music, MC spoke to miriamchristine.com
about her love of the game and the teams she supports… and
why performing at Roots Hall gave her such a buzz:
“I’ve always followed football with a passion.
My first love was Brazil because that’s where I was
born, but on the international scene, I also follow the fortunes
(and misfortunes) of Malta, my adoptive country, and England.
At club level, I’ve followed English and Italian football
for a long time, but it wasn’t until I met my husband,
Mark, that I watched a team play live… and that team
was Southend United (also known by their nickname as ‘The
Shrimpers’). Ever since then, we’ve taken every
opportunity going to travel back to England and watch The
Shrimpers. They may be in League 2 (for now), but I was captivated
by the team and inspired by the dedicated support they get.
The Premiership and Serie ‘A’ have never been
quite as appealing since!”
MC explained; “That’s why performing at Roots
Hall meant so much. It was fantastic news to find out that
the club had agreed to me doing a couple of numbers, and
it was a thrill to step out on the pitch of the team I support… and
with my music. If the chance comes around to repeat this
experience, I won’t hesitate in accepting.”

“Synchronised” is
the latest single to be released by Miriam Christine; another
track from her critically acclaimed album, “Little
Zee”
The song can be heard on radio stations across the islands
and the accompanying video will also be shown on various
programmes on local TV stations as well as online on Miriam
Christine’s official site and on di-ve.com.
The track follows the release “Hush”, which
came out at the beginning of summer. “Hush” proved
to be a hit with its strong contemporary R&B vibe, but “Synchronised” has
a very different feel.
Miriam Christine explains, “This new song is more
along the lines of R&B funk. I think that with this and
the previous singles I have released so far from the album
(including ‘What We Really Mean’ and ‘Hush’),
there’s a good example of the variety of styles on
the album “Little Zee”. This track has more of
a ‘live band’ feel… and that’s something
we wanted to show in the video… so the band members
feature heavily.”
Speaking of the video, the singer continued, “The
video is very different to the ones I’ve done up to
now. I’ve never had a video with a band before. We
went with quite a natural feel, with some humour. We were
lucky, once again, to have the co-operation of a great crew,
a fantastic location (Olympus Music) that suited the concept
perfectly, and great clothes from the designer Joseph Grima
(Mugi).”
The video, along with previous videos, will be used in promoting
Miriam Christine to contacts abroad. |

MIRIAM CHRISTINE CHOSEN TO BE MALTA’S
AMBASSADOR FOR THE EU CAMPAIGN – FOR DIVERSITY. AGAINST
DISCRIMINATION.
The campaign, with the slogan "For Diversity. Against
Discrimination", is being developed in close co-operation
with EU governments, trade unions, employers' organisations
and NGOs, and was launched on 16th June 2003 and will run
till 2006.
Media Consulta is responsible for the implementation of
the campaign. The agency has a network of agency correspondents
in every EU Member State, including Malta, and has chosen
local personality Miriam Christine to be the ambassador and
spokesperson for the campaign for Malta and Gozo. The popular
singer and songwriter will be spreading the word for this
campaign during various shows, concerts and TV programmes.
Miriam Christine explained, “This campaign is aimed
at combating discrimination, and I’m proud to have
been asked to be part of it. Discrimination exists in many
ways: because of racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs,
sexual orientation, age and disability and I think it’s
a big issue that needs highlighting. I hope I can assist
in making people more aware of it.”
The campaign aims to communicate a positive message on diversity
to help prevent people from being discriminated against in
any way. It is being publicised through a wide range of channels,
such as TV or print adverts, website, seminars and media
events. Brochures, flyers and posters will provide information
about new EU rules against discrimination in the various
Member States.
Born in Brazil but raised in Gozo, Miriam Christine was
all too aware of her ethnicity when she was young. “My
upbringing was very good, but I did suffer from bullying
at school,” Miriam Christine revealed. “In some
ways, I was looked at as being ‘different’. This
left a mark on me and I went through stages when my self-esteem
was very low. It was through music that I feel I overcame
prejudice and earned respect. I re-discovered my true self,
and belief in myself was restored. I was also lucky to grow
up within a society that, on the whole, is very warm and
welcoming, so my experiences were more isolated, and I think
they were a product of a lack of education and awareness;
something this campaign is tackling brilliantly.”
And by pure coincidence, the title track on Miriam Christine’s
latest CD album ‘Little Zee’ is about the racial
prejudices she suffered as a child and how she managed to
overcome them. “This EU campaign will help a lot of
people, both victims of discrimination… and people
who don’t understand the value of diversity… and
I’m glad to be part of it.”

MIRIAM CHRISTINE RELEASES NEW MUSIC VIDEO
EXCLUSIVELY ON THE INTERNET
Miriam Christine has released a music video to one of the tracks
on her new album, ‘Little Zee’, exclusively on
the Internet.
Talking about how the music video to the song ‘Ain’t
Afraid’ happened, Miriam Christine explained, “We
thought Ain’t Afraid would be a single when we were
in the early stages of producing the album. When my husband
and I went to Brazil we decided to take this song and the
other planned single, ‘What We Really Mean’,
with us and shoot music videos of them. ‘What We Really
Mean’ was released earlier this year, but we decided
to release different songs afterwards and it seemed that
the promo for ‘Ain’t Afraid’ was never
going to get seen. We then chose to release it through the
Internet. The web is perfect for these special kind of releases.”
The video was filmed in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil’s
original capital. The unique qualities of the colonial city
are captured in the production, and parts of the video were
filmed in the same main square as Michael Jackson’s
promo to ‘They Don’t Care About Us’. |

Miriam Christine
Releases New Album, Single and Music Video
Miriam Christine’s new album, ‘Little Zee’ is
out on release and is available through various retail outlets
(including Exotique and D’Amato) and online through
sites such as di-ve.com.
Describing the album, Miriam Christine says “The style
has an R&B influence, but R&B is a very generic term
nowadays. There are influences such as funk, soul and even
a hint of rock music here and there. We wanted to give ourselves
plenty of room for experimenting and exploring different
styles to marry with R&B and I’m very satisfied
with the results”.
Producer and musician Boris Cezek developed the tracks after
Miriam Christine had written the music and Miriam Christine
is keen to point out that “Boris added a lot to this
album. He took my desire to explore R&B and did something
different to the norm. We were constantly surprised with
how the tracks were developing… and that was such
a great feeling of excitement. He brought a lot of musical
knowledge and character to the project”.
The latest single to be released from the album’s
15 tracks is ‘Hush’, an up-tempo summer tune.
The song is playing on radio stations now and a music video
has been produced to accompany the release.
“We were very lucky to receive the support we did
for this video; Westin Dragonara Resort allowed us to film
within the hotel (visually, this was the ideal location),
Muscat Motors let us use a BMW Z4 sports car and Ray Ashley
made a dress to our requirements. Through Sarah Camilleri,
members of the Funkadelic dance company worked hard to provide
us with the choreography we needed… and the rest of
the cast and crew worked their socks off. As I said… we
were very lucky.”
Miriam Christine would like to thank her sponsors; Artist(e)
hair products, Nee Make Up, Spikes hair salon, Unitel, and
Visual Impact production company for their support. |

NEW SINGLE RELEASED
‘Hush’ the new single from Miriam Christine’s album ‘Little
Zee’ has been released.
Miriam Christine commented that “being
an upbeat song, it has a strong summer-feel, so given the
fact that the new single was coming out in July, it seemed
the natural choice was to release Hush.” She added, “Hush
is probably the most mainstream and contemporary style R&B
track from the album. Whilst other tracks are routed in R&B
(which is such a generic term nowadays), we gave ourselves
room to explore influences of funk, groove and soul. There’s
even a hint of a rock music influence here and there on some
of the album tracks.”
‘Hush’ can be heard on Malta’s radio stations (and look out
for the music video on TV and on this site!). |

NEW
SINGLE AND MUSIC VIDEO
'What We Really Mean', an upbeat R&B track, was released
on Wednesday 3rd March on Xfm Radio, A3fm Radio, 89.7 Bay,
Calypso Radio, Capital Radio, Smash Radio, Radio 101, Super
1 Radio, Radju Malta and RTK. The song is about how sometimes
words and gifts are not always enough of a reassurance to show
what a relationship really means. It’s about asking for
something more; something that can only be conveyed on another
level… in actions and feelings.
The music promo for ‘What We Really Mean’ was directed,
filmed and edited by Mark Warner and was shot in Brazil. The
video is being shown on various TV programmes on all TV stations
(but you can also check it out in the Audio/Visual section
of this website).
Talking about how it became possible to shoot the videos in
Brazil, Miriam Christine commented, “I was lucky to be
able to produce two videos in such a location. Everything came
about at the right time. The singles had just been produced
when I was getting married. We were going to Brazil for our
honeymoon and came up with the idea of taking a camera and
the music with us… and see how we could make use of the
locations. We didn’t really plan on producing videos
for these songs, but the temptation was just too much. Of course,
marrying a film director helps.” The singer adds, “I
am also very grateful to Carmel Bruno of Visual Impact for
providing us with a camera as well as his post production facilities
in Gharghur. None of this would have been possible without
such support”
Locations used in the video for ‘What We Really Mean’ include
a samba school in Rio de Janeiro, a waterfall 2 hours drive
from the capital, Brasilia, and the outskirts of Santo Antonio
Do Descoberto. This is the town where Miriam Christine was
originally from – and where she was famously re-united
with her family last year. |

SUDDEN
DISTRACTIONS
Early last year, Miriam Christine was very active in changing
her musical direction, and with it, her image. Soon after releasing
her first R&B single (Reptile Lover), the artist launched
her official website and the second single ‘Hold On’,
along with a music video. She was busy promoting this new direction
and planning to record more material, which would lead to a
new album for release late in 2003. Then it all went remarkably
quiet. Why?
“My personal life took some very surprising turns. I’m sure 2003
will go down as one of the most astonishing years of my entire life,” Miriam
Christine explains.
“First of all, my long term partner proposed to me. Something I didn’t
expect to happen in a million years. We didn’t want a long, drawn out engagement,
so we planned on getting married civilly in the UK (which is where he’s
from) and in church in Gozo. This took a lot of planning. At this point, we were
still working on new material, but not as intensely as before. We had also planned
to spend our honeymoon in Brazil, which is where I was born, but had never returned
since my adoption. One idea was to try and find my Brazilian family at the same
time. Then came another huge shock and, considering our honeymoon plans, a massive
coincidence. With one day’s notice, a popular TV show flew us out to Brazil
to find my biological mother and family. Having been adopted at the age of 1
and never knowing my Brazilian family, it was a very emotional and life defining
moment when we found them and I was re-united.”
Miriam Christine explains that a surprise visit to Malta by
her Brazilian mother, further trips to the UK and pending wedding
plans finally got the better of her focus on the music side
of things. Even so, another two tracks were recorded.
Miriam Christine explains, “We were fortunate enough
to have ‘What We Really Mean’ (the new single)
and ‘Ain’t Afraid’ ready when we went on
our honeymoon. Luckily, my husband is a filmmaker, so we took
the tracks with us and made us of the fantastic location by
shooting two music videos. It was an opportunity we both felt
we couldn’t let pass by.”
Now, 2004 has begun with a new concerted effort to release ‘What
We Really Mean’ and work on the album. Another completed
track, ‘Ain’t Afraid’, was announced as the
next single on this site last year, but when ‘What We
Really Mean’ was completed, it was decided that the upbeat
nature of the song felt better after the mid-tempo style of
the previous two singles. “When we got back earlier this
year, I went straight into the recording studio and continued
working on more songs. I’m very happy with how things
are proceeding at the moment. I can’t wait till the album
is finished.” |

ALBUM
PROGRESSES
Miriam Christine’s first R&B Album will be launched
later this year, with almost half of the thirteen-tracks now
recorded.
The album will include the three singles ‘Reptile Lover’, ‘Hold
On’ and the very latest ‘What We Really Mean’ as
well as the full version of ‘Mystery Mama’. Some
TV viewers in Malta will remember this track as it was sung,
unplugged, by Miriam Christine during the TV show that re-united
her with her family in Brazil. ‘Mystery Mama’ was
written months before the ‘Brazilian event’ and
is the most personal song the artist has ever recorded. The
emotional track, with a strong R&B groove, revolves around
Miriam Christine’s adoption and concerns unanswered questions
she had about herself and her ‘lost family’.
Another single release is planned before the launch of the
Album itself. We’ll certainly keep you informed about
this.
Boris Cezek, Miriam Christine’s producer and arranger,
commented, “When (Miriam) Christine came to do the first
song it was very clear she wanted to continue exploring an
R&B style with a kind of soul vibe. This direction was
something new to me. I must admit that I wasn’t a huge
fan of R&B. I am personally more into pop rock / groove,
so the first song we collaborated on took quite a while to
complete. As a matter of fact, we had to start producing the
track over again from scratch a few times. We found the right
recipe in the end, and since then, the direction we’re
taking has become much clearer… although it tends to
continually evolve from one track to the next, which keeps
the music alive.”
Regarding the overall style of the music, Boris says, “I
wouldn't say
that the style we are creating is pure R&B in the break-beat
/ hip-hop style. Nor is it simply ‘soul’... because
of the different influences. Having said this, there is a definite
R&B backbone in the music. I think this is a real plus
point. This, along with my own personal music orientation and
the quality of Christine’s vocals, helps us create something
different, with its own flavour. I think this can be characterized
as Miriam Christine’s own take on R&B.”
“Christine is a wonderful person to work with,” Boris concludes. “She
works very fast and is very easy going. I’d put this down to the amount
of experience she brings to the studio. I have no doubt that we will make a great
album together." |

NOMINATIONS FOR THE MALTA MUSIC AWARDS
On the evening of 13th November, the nominations for the 2003
Carlsberg Malta Music Awards were announced at a party held
at TGI Friday. Miriam Christine picked up nominations in the
categories of Best Female, Best Hip Hop / R&B and Best
Single (for Hold On).
Speaking to her official website, Miriam Christine said, ‘It’s
always great to be nominated for awards, whether from your
peers or from the public, but these nominations mean a lot
to me because over the past year and a half or so, I’ve
worked hard at taking my music and my style in a new direction.
These awards show that the hard work has received some recognition.’ When
asked about her hopes for the night, Miriam Christine added, ‘I
may get lucky and pick up an award, but I’m not expecting
to do so to be honest. My name came up amongst some very respected
artists who also deserve an award… but I’ll enjoy
the night no matter what.’
The Carlsberg Malta Music Awards will be held at the Eden Arena,
Paceville on November 29th and will be hosted by well known
MTV VJ Neil Cole.

NEVER
ENDING SURPRISES [20.06.03]
On Sunday 15th it was revealed on a local tv programme that
Miriam Christine did, in fact, locate her mother in the small
town of Santo Antonio Do Descoberto by virtue of hard work
and a great deal of luck. The new song 'Mystery Mama'
was also unveiled with some very positive feedback. Miriam
Christine was then asked to sing a song for the viewers and
studio audience. Still emotionally choked, she stepped up to
the microphone and began to deliver a solo performance
of 'Amazing Grace' when the doors to the stage opened behind
her, revealing her mother who had been flown in all
the way from Brazil by the producers of program for a two week
stay. Needless to say, this was yet another massive shock for
the singer and her adoptive parents who were also present and
overjoyed. |

A
BRAZILIAN ADVENTURE [14.06.03]
On Sunday 1st of June a popular Maltese television programme
sprung a massive surprise on Miriam Christine… live on
air. After finishing a live duet, Miriam Christine was asked
to sit with the presenters and was told that the following
day she would be flying to Brazil in order to try and find
her birth mother and her brothers and sisters. This would be
her first trip to Brazil since being adopted by Maltese parents
at the age of 13 months. As an extra twist, the surprise was
actually initiated by Miriam Christine’s adoptive parents,
knowing that this has been a dream of their daughter’s
for a long time. The results of the search will be shown on
this Sunday in a 3 part documentary filmed in Brazil. The answer
to whether Miriam Christine managed to locate her family has
been kept a secret for a week… but the search definitely
had its twist and turns! |

MYSTERY
MAMA [14.06.03]
Only weeks before the surprise trip to Brazil, Miriam Christine
and Mark Warner co-wrote what is by far the artist’s
most personal song to date. ‘Mystery Mama’ is a
soulful number dealing with Miriam Christine’s adoption.
As a result of the journey to her homeland, Miriam Christine
recorded a special version of the song which will be aired
on the Sunday. Mark Warner, who shot and edited the documentary,
also produced a music video to accompany the song. |
